I have been natural for about 4 years now. I usually wear a large afro or braided extensions. Once on a cruise, my sister flat ironed the front section of my hair so that I could wear a straight "quick weave" to dinner. When I washed it...It would not go back kinky!! I tried everything to get the natural texture back, but nothing worked. I was devastated! I had to wear braids for a long time, and kept cutting my hair in the front until it all grew back naturally!!

Ever since, I have been afraid to straighten my hair. It is made with beeswax and natural oils. It absorbs nicely into the hair leaving a gentle sheen with no greasy afterfeel. It contains no mineral oil, paraffin, parabens or fragrance oils.

Use it to:
-soften and condition dry, textured hair.
-enhance your natural wave pattern when used on curly hair.
-as a pressing cream.
-to seal in moisture after washing your hair.
-to reduce frizz
-to condition braids and twists.

To use, apply a small amount to the palm of your hand and rub your hands together to melt the pomade. Then gently smooth the pomade into your hair from the roots to the ends to soften and condition your hair. This book is a standard in the area of essential oils. According to Ms. Lawless, patchouli essential oil is naturally anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and bactericidal. It is naturally effective against dandruff and dermatitis. What that means is that it can help deal with some of the scalp and hair problems that people have. If you jump around frequently from one product to another, or from one hair routine to another, you may not actually know what is working for your hair and what isn't. The best way to find out what is actually benefiting your hair is to keep notes on what you are doing. Write down the products you use and how often you use them, the methods you use, and when you use them, and any other information that relates to your hair. She does not sit still for long. Thanks.

Answer: If your daughter's hair needs softening, I recommend that you try Northwest Scents shampoo and conditioner on her hair in the citrus ylang-ylang scent. Sometimes commercially available baby shampoos can actually dry out the hair. You can also put a little pomade in her hair after washing it, while it is still damp, to add softeness to her hair. Just put a little pomade in the palm of your hands, rub your hands together to warm up the pomade, and then gently grab her hair and rub the pomade in from scalp to roots.

As far as styling goes, for a 6 year old, braids and/or twists are probably the easiest natural styling option. When I say braids, I don't mean hundreds of tiny braids all over her head. Just one or two that are done as cornrows.

One easy braided style is to just part the hair in two sections, by taking a comb, and gently parting it down the middle from the center of her forehead to the nape of her neck. Gently comb each section, and use a scrunchie to hold the section in place that you are not working on. With the section that you are working on, gently do a cornrow from the forehead to the nape of the neck. Continue the braid to the ends of the hair. Do the same for the other side. You can finish the style by putting a barrette or other hair decoration at the end of the braid.

Another easy braided style is to just do one cornrow from the middle of her forehead to the nape of her neck. When you get to the nape of her neck, continue the braid to the ends of the hair. You can finish the style by putting a barrette or other hair decoration at the end of the braid.

If you do the braids at night, and then tie up her hair in a silk scarf (if she lets you), and if the scarf stays on overnight, you will probably not have to do her hair in the morning. If you do the braids at night, don't put the barrettes on until the morning, because sleeping in hair accessories can cause some hair damage.

If you don't know how to braid, or would prefer another option, you could try loose twists. For a little girl, you could part her hair into two or four sections. Working with one section at a time, gather the hair together as if you were doing a ponytail, but use a silk or satin scrunchie to gather the hair together. Avoid rubbers bands and hair rubbers because these cause hair damage. After putting on the scrunchie, gently comb the hair and divide it into two sections. Twist the two sections together loosely like you are braiding them, but you are not braiding them, only twisting them (braids use three sections of hair, twists use two). When you get to the end of the twist, braid the ends of the hair together to keep the twist from coming apart, or attach a barrette or other hair accessory to keep the twist from separating.

O. I'm 17 and i do my own hair. I would really love to see it actually lay down when its pressed. When ever I get it pressed or I press it people have a hard time getting it to lay down. My hair is really thick and hard to manage. What would you guys recommend I do about it?

Answer: Hi. You need to use shampoos and conditioners that soften your hair, and hair oils and/or pomades that seal in moisture without causing heavy buildup and stickiness. If you are using products that contain mineral oil or petrolatum, or shampoos that contain sulfates, these products may be drying out your hair and causing it to be stiff when you press it. Thick heavy mineral oil and petrolatum based hair grease will cause your hair to be stiff and will also dry out your hair. Stay away from that and use a natural hair oil or natural pomade when you press your hair. Northwest Scents products are free from mineral oil, petrolatum, sulfates, and parabens, and are formulated to soften and condition dry, black and afro textured hair.

O. My hair is really short in the back. What can I do to make it all even?

Answer: Many people have hair that varies in texture on their head. Some people have soft hair in the front, coarse in the back. Some people have thicker hair on one side that the other. It sounds like your hair is probably softer, or at least more sensitive to your hair care methods, than the rest of your hair. I would pay close attention to how to you take care of your hair, especially in the back, and try to eliminate anything you think that could be causing damage to the hair at the back of your head. Avoid tight braids, extensions, harsh chemicals, excessive heat. Use moisturizing hair care products, and be really gentle with all of your hair, especially the hair at the nape of your neck, and it should grow back.

O. If you don't comb your hair every day, then when you do comb it, you will see more hair than that. You should look at the hairs that are coming out. If they have a root attached to one end of the hair, then the hairs are coming out normally. If there is no root at the end of the hair, then it is breaking. A few hairs will break, because of your hair texture (black hair varies from thick to thin along the hair shaft). However, if most of the hairs you see are broken, then there is a problem, either with the way you are combing your hair, or the products and methods you are using on your hair, and you will want to change that.

O. I believe I may be harming her hair by blow drying, pressing and the heavy oils I put into her hair to try and prevent it from reverting so quickly. Please tell me which products I should use on her hair. because after reading your tips I know I am doing a lot wrong to her hair.

Answer: I would like to encourage you to try natural, unpressed styles with your daughter, and possibly go back to pressing when she gets older. I recommend as pressing a chemical-free technique for black hair care, , but for young girls, who can be wiggly, who like to swim and play and do things which would make pressed hair difficult to maintain, I recommend natural, unpressed styles. Dry, kinky hair can be softened easily with the right shampoos and conditioners. Please visit our site at http://www.natural-black-hair-care.info and take a look at some of the articles. One way to dealing with black hair naturally is by wet styling it. This is basically styling natural black hair when it is wet and moisturized. It is much easier to work with in this condition, than when it is dry. If you try this method, you might find it a much more enjoyable way to deal with your daughter's hair than pressing at this stage in her life. You can read about this technique at http://www.natural-black-hair-care.info/natural-styles-for-black-hair.html.

O. Weekly? Every 2 weeks? or How often?

Answer: I recommend that you only press your hair after washing it. If you wash your hair weekly, then I would press weekly after washing. If you wash twice a month, then I would press bimonthly, after doing your hair. Pressing in moderation is fine, but when it is done too frequently, or at too high of a temperature, it will take a toll on the hair. If you have time, we have some more tips for hair pressing at http://www.pressing-hair.info. You didn't tell me exactly how you are wearing your hair now, so I will give some general tips which you can use for growing longer hair.

For most people, hair growth comes when they stop doing the things to their hair that are causing breakage. For us as black people, it is not that our hair doesn't grow, the problems we face with our hair are usually due to doing too much to our hair. The things that we do usually cause hair damage, which causes hair breakage. For example:

If you are using chemical treatments of any type (relaxers, texturizers, dyes, etc.) I would recommend that you stop using them. Chemical treatments work by altering the natural structure of your hair. This causes the hair to weaken over time. For some people it happens right away. Others don't see the damage until years later, and by then it is often irreversible. So, if you are wearing chemical treatments, my advice is to stop them.

If you are using synthetic hair, such as braids with extensions, or weaves, I would recommend that you avoid those too. They tend to cause hair damage by adding weight to the hair shaft, which can cause the hair to be pulled out.

If you use heat on your hair, be moderate with it. Don't use your flat iron or pressing comb or curling iron every day. And when you do use a heated styling too, don't turn it up to the highest temperature. Heated styling tools work by temporarily altering the protein bonds in our hair. But if the temperature is too high, the changes become permanent, they weaken the hair, and they cause it to break off.

Do use shampoos and conditioners and oils that are moisturizing and gentle. Avoid sulfates in your shampoos (these are very drying and can cause the hair to become brittle), and avoid mineral oil and petrolatum in your conditioners and hair oils. Mineral oil and petrolatum can actually cause the hair to dry out. They coat the hair shaft (instead of being absorbed into it) and prevent other moisturizers from penetrating the hair shaft, causing dryness.

Be patient with your hair. Learn to love it for what it is. Not everyone can or will have floor length hair. Give your hair time to grow to its maximum length, and nurture it the best that you can.

O. I just want to loosen up some of my hair, because it feels so thick at the roots. I know too much heat is not good for any type of hair. I was just going to press my hair only after I wash it, like my mom use to do when I was a child. Thanks!!

Answer: I wouldn't recommend pressing hair that has been treated with a permanent color. If what you are looking for is loosening the roots, I would recommend using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, and detangling your hair in the shower when it is wet and saturated with conditioner, and loosely braiding your hair while it dries to keep the roots looser. I've got tips for how to do this at http://www.nwscents.com/tips-and-advice-for-taking-care-of-Black-African-American-and-Textured-Hair_files/how-to-detangle-natural-black-and-afro-hair.html

O. The best way to use a towel after washing your hair is to blot your hair to remove excess moisture. The towel may cause breakage if you rub yourhair dry with it. Blotting is best. Microfiber towels are an option. Towels made from microfiber are supposed to absorb more moisture than regular towels, which in turn helps your hair to dry faster.

O. I have used everything to press it and nothing holds the press. What should I use?

Answer: There are a couple of things that might affect how well your hair holds a press. These are:

1. The quality of the tool that you are using. I recommend using an electric pressing comb or a true-ceramic flat iron with a temperature regulator. These allow you to control the temperature while you are pressing.

2. The products you use on your hair before you press your hair. Believe it or not, the shampoo and conditioner you use on your hair before you press your hair will affect the ability of your hair to hold a press. If you are using a shampoo that is drying to the hair, and either not using conditioner, or using one that doesn't properly moisturize and condition your hair, it is much harder to get a decent press, and your hair will revert. I recommend that you try our products (http://www.nwscents.com) to see if they help you in this area.

3. The products that you use on your hair while you are pressing your hair. I recommend using a natural hair oil as a heat protectant when you press your hair. I would avoid alcohol-based sprays (heat protectants which contain SD alcohol or grain alcohol). These are drying to the
hair.

For more tips on pressing, visit our site at http://pressing-hair.info

O. I live on the east coast of florida with medium to high humidity. Is there any thing special that I can do to keep my hair from reverting back to natural after pressing it? Pressing last less than 48 hours.

A. Hi. It is tougher to keep hair straight in high humidity. What I recommend is that you try using a good quality flat iron instead of a pressing comb (if you aren't using one already) because a flat iron will help reduce moisture absorption by helping the cuticles on the shafts of your hair lay down flat. I also recommend that you use moisturizing hair products (like the ones we sell at http://www.nwscents.com) . If the products that you are using on your hair are drying, they will dry out your hair, causing your hair to want to absorb moisture, which will make it more difficult for you to achieve the results that you want.

O. Here are some tips for how to use it.

1. Use as a regular conditioner. Use your bottle of Northwest Scents conditioner the way you regularly use conditioner. Apply a small amount to your hair after you have washed and rinsed it. Let it sit in your hair for several minutes, and then rinse.

2. Use as a deep conditioner. If your hair is extra dry you can use Northwest Scents hair conditoner as a deep conditioner. To do this, wash and rinse your hair. Dry partially (blot out some of the extra water), but don't let your hair dry completely. Apply some conditioner to your hair and work it into your hair from the scalp to the ends of your hair. Put a plastic bonnet (like a shower cap) on your hair and leave it on for 30 minutes. The heat from your head to warm your hair. This will enable the oils and conditioning ingredients in the conditioner to penetrate your hair giving it a deep conditioning treatment.

3. Use as a detangler. If you have a hard time combing through your hair after you wash it, try combing through it in the shower when it is wet and has a lot of Northwest Scents conditioner on it. Use a wide tooth comb, and comb through your hair in small sections from the ends to the roots to detangle it.

4. Use as a hair setting lotion. If you wear your hair in natural styles, like braids or twists, apply some Northwest Scents hair conditioner to your hair before you style it to help set the style.

5. Use as a daily hair moisturizer. If you have dry hair, and you are wearing your hair naturally or relaxed, apply a little bit of Northwest Scents hair conditioner to your hair to help moisturize it in between washes.

O. For light to regular facial hair we recommend our Lavender Shaving Foam. It's natural formula helps to soften the hair, and leaves the skin soft after shaving. In addition, it contains lavender essential oil which leaves a delicate scent on the skin and helps to heal nicks and/or wounds. Our Lavender Shaving Foam does not contain soaps, alcohol, salts, dyes, artificial colors or propellants. We recommend using this product with a regular manual razor or with wet/dry electric razors.

For coarser hair we recommend our Lavender Shaving Oil. To use it simply wet your skin and apply some of the oil. Shave as normal. The oil moisturizes your skin, softens the hair, and leaves a gentle scent on the skin. It also reduces friction, which helps to reduce or eliminate razor bumps, making shaving a much more pleasant experience. It contains a special blend of natural essential oils, including lavender, sandalwood, roman chamomile, and clary sage, which help to heal and soothe the skin. Our shaving oil can be used with a regular manual razor or with wet/dry electric razors.

For really coarse hair try our Lavender Shaving Oil and Lavender Shaving Foam together. Dampen the skin, apply a small amount of Lavender Shaving Oil, and then put the Lavender Shaving Foam on top. Shave as normal.

O. Our son is full African American descent. I keep it cut very short. Also, we currently use J&J baby wash for hair & body, plus Eucerine lotion fo his body morning and night and oil sheen olive for his hair, but I only do that in the mornings. We wash his hair twice a week. Is this an okay regiment? Or do I need to be using a conditioner?

Answer: I don't have a line of products specifically for boys, but our regular product line is gentle enough to use on children, and I can provide the products in unscented (which I would recommend for babies) if you are interested in them.

If your son is really young (which he probably is because you are using baby wash) you don't need a conditioner. And you probably can limit the shampooing to once a week instead of twice a week. Bathe him as often as you need to, but I would recommend shampooing once a week unless it is necessary to do it more (such as if he gets food in his hair or does other things that babies tend to do).

I think that your regimen is fine (shampooing weekly, lotion for his body, and oil in the hair). Where I would be careful is with the product choice. I used to use Johnson and Johnson on my son's hair when he was a baby up until he was about 3 and from what I remember it dried his hair out. However, when my son was a baby, Johnson and Johnson didn't have the "naturals" line out, so my experience is from their original baby shampoo.

If your son's hair seems dry and/or brittle, or if he gets dandruff or cradle cap, I would switch to a different brand of oil (more natural). I'm not familiar with oil sheen olive, but if it is a product made with synthetic oils (mineral oil and/or petrolatum) I would switch to an oil or pomade made with natural oils and no mineral oil or petrolatum. Mineral oil and petrolatum are actually drying to the hair.

O. Please explain. Also, have you or your family had success with wet setting longer natural hair around 10-12 in? I've tried it before and it tends to turn out frizzy. Thanks.

Answer: Thanks for purchasing the book Natural Black Hair and a sample kit from us. Yes, you should use a comb to detangle your hair fully to do the wet set. It is the action of combing your hair, smoothing it with your fingers as you are combing it, and pulling it gently as you put the curler in it which will help you get a smoother curl. Your hair will dry the way you put it on the curlers so you want it to be as smooth as possible. Use the conditioner as a setting lotion to help smooth your hair. The two things that will make your hair frizzy are the products you are using and if your hair isn't thoroughly dry when you take it out of the curlers.

Make sure your hair has dried completely before you take out the curlers because the smallest bit of dampness will cause frizziness. You can use a bonnet dryer to speed up the drying process.

The longer your hair gets, the harder it is to do a wet set with curlers because you need bigger curlers. My sister does flat twists and uses curlers on the ends of her hair (see pages 36 to 38 in the book)

O.
